A Barad course

Fiber types and selection standards

Basic to intermediate6 learning sections

Single-mode, multimode, G.652 or G.657; each of these names carries specific properties. In this course we go to those specifications and how to read a datasheet.

The outline on this page is a proposal; the final program is announced before registration.

Optical fiber types and related standards

Who this course is for

Design and technical purchasing specialists, quality control staff and network installers

Before you join

A basic understanding of loss, wavelength and the difference between single-mode and multimode fiber; the fundamentals course is recommended.

What the program covers

  • Comparing the single-mode and multimode families
  • Reading fiber parameters in a datasheet
  • Preparing a selection matrix and a purchasing checklist
Learning path

Proposed course outline

The proposed program is laid out in six sections. Ask us about the details of the exercises and the tools you will need before you join.

01Map of the fiber families
  • Single-mode and multimode: the use and limits of each family
  • Understanding core and cladding dimensions and the coating diameter
  • How the specifications of a fiber differ from the specifications of a cable
02Multimode grades
  • Understanding the OM1 to OM5 naming in technical documents
  • The difference between modal bandwidth and the wavelengths used in practice
  • Matching the fiber to the module and the required distance from the datasheet
03G.652 single-mode fiber
  • Getting to know the scope of the ITU-T G.652 standard
  • The loss, dispersion and mode field diameter parameters
  • Reading the specifications of one fiber and comparing datasheets
04G.657 bend-insensitive fiber
  • The purpose of ITU-T G.657 and groups A and B
  • How bending performance relates to choosing fiber for access networks
  • Checking connection compatibility and conditions of use against the manufacturer's documents
05Choosing for a project
  • The needs of backbone, data center and FTTH
  • A comparison matrix of fiber type, distance and active equipment
  • Writing the required purchasing specification without ambiguity
06Checking documents and acceptance
  • Identifying the version and title of the standard on a datasheet
  • Separating the test report, the manufacturer's claim and the contract requirement
  • Building a compliance table and recording technical questions before purchase

Suggested exercise

For three scenarios, a building, an inter-site route and a data center, present the suggested fiber type with the reason for the choice and the documents required.

Before you join

Is this outline the final program?

This page is a proposed plan for the course content. The actual outline, the way it is delivered and the details of the exercises are agreed with participants before registration.

How are the time, cost and venue set?

To get this information, submit a coordination request for this course. The date, cost, instructor and venue are announced once the program is confirmed.

Does the course include hands-on practice?

This plan proposes one practical exercise. Running it as a workshop and using equipment depends on the facilities and the final program.
