What affects wire and cable prices: a guide to comparing proformas

AuthorBarad Editorial TeamTechnical reviewBarad Technical TeamPublishedUpdatedReading time5 minLength≈ 1,150 words

You have asked two sellers for a price on one cable and the figures are far apart. Before choosing, it is best to see exactly what product and what conditions each offer was written for.

At a glance

Two prices can be compared when the product specifications, the quantity, the currency and the delivery terms are the same. Put these side by side first; then look at the price difference.

Two prices two specifications

Sometimes the price difference starts with the product itself. A title like "three-core cable" does not yet say what the cross-section is, what the conductor is made of, or what the insulation and sheath are. Brand and model are part of the same specification. Until these are the same, you cannot put two numbers side by side and say which offer is better.

For single-core flexible wire we usually give the cross-section; for example, "flexible wire 2.5". For multi-core cable the core count is also needed; "flexible cable 3×2.5" is a different title. If you order from a drawing or from an earlier cable, the product code and the picture printed on the cable can prevent a naming mistake.

The number on the offer is not the whole cost

The conductor, insulation, sheath and parts such as shield or armor affect a product's price. Order quantity and supply conditions can also change a sales offer. Even so, for a comparison you don't need to guess a cable's price from raw material rates; ask for an offer for that exact model with a clear date and conditions.

For example, one price may be in rials and per meter, and another in tomans and per coil. One may include tax and shipping and the other may not. Delivery time and payment terms matter alongside the price, especially when the purchase has to fit the project's installation schedule.

If an offer is much cheaper, read the specifications and these conditions again. A price difference alone does not prove the product's quality. If a substitute model is proposed, its compatibility with the circuit and the installation site must be checked with the project's technical lead.

A short clear request

The first request does not need to be long. The product name, quantity and delivery location are a good starting point. The sample below only shows the shape of a request; it is not a wire choice for a specific circuit:

Copper flexible wire 2.5, Khorasan Electric (Afsharnejad), 200 meters in total. Please state the price, tax status, packaging type, shipping cost and how long the offer is valid. We will give the color we need when we coordinate.

If you have not chosen a model yet, instead of guessing a cable name, send sales the use and the installation conditions. A drawing or the project's specification sheet also helps the conversation start from the real need.

An old list for a purchase today

From an old list you can learn model names and how pricing is done, but its numbers belong to the date of that document. For a new purchase, get a new price. On Barad's price list page, the date of the archive image is shown.

If you need several models, collect them all with their quantities in one proforma. That way the request reaches sales in one piece, and we discuss price, supply and delivery for those items together.

A checklist for comparing two proformas

Comparison rowRecord in both offers
Product identityBrand, exact product code, core count and cross-section
Technical constructionConductor material and class, insulation, sheath, and shield or armor if any
Quantity and packagingNet length, coil or reel, the length of each package and the sales unit
Basis of the amountRials or tomans, price per meter or per package, tax status
Delivery cost and termsShipping, packaging, delivery location and the stated supply time
Commercial termsIssue date, validity period and payment method

If any row is unclear, ask the seller. A lower final amount may relate to a smaller quantity or different delivery terms.

Don't treat flexible wire flexible cable and shielded cable as the same thing

The page for introduces a single-core product; by contrast, has a different core count. The number 2.5 being the same does not make the two the same product.

Likewise, has another construction. Don't remove or add a shield just because of a price difference; the circuit's need, the environment and the installation method must be reviewed in the design. The product pages help you put that option's code and specifications into your request.

Compare delivery cost on the same basis

A simple basis for comparison is the sum of the price for an equal quantity of the product plus the explicit costs of tax, shipping and packaging. If these costs are not separated in the offer, adding two final numbers together can be misleading. Write the supply time and payment terms next to the amount; a delay on one item may change the installation schedule.

Fluctuations in raw materials and market conditions can affect a sales offer, but the final price of a specific cable cannot be calculated from the price of copper or aluminum alone. For a purchase decision, get a current offer for that model with a stated validity period.

Frequently asked questions

Can the price of a coil be compared with a price per meter?

First establish the net length of the coil and the currency, and convert both amounts to the same basis. Tax and shipping must also be counted the same way.

Is a cheaper cable necessarily of lower quality?

Quality cannot be concluded from a price difference alone. First match the code, specifications, product documents and commercial terms.

Are this article's products recommended for my circuit?

These are examples to help understand the difference between a product's name and its construction. Choosing a cross-section and model for a specific circuit needs a technical review of the project.
